This week, we’re proud to feature Ellie Olson, Executive Director of The Rivers.
For Ellie, senior living isn’t just a career. It’s a journey that began unexpectedly and evolved into a lifelong passion for serving older adults, supporting families, and building meaningful relationships.
Ellie’s path to senior living wasn’t one she originally planned. After high school, she began pursuing a nursing degree while caring for her mother, who was battling Stage 4 breast cancer. When family circumstances brought her back home, she continued her education while working in healthcare. During a search for a new opportunity, she happened to drive past The Rivers, walked inside to inquire about open positions, and was hired into housekeeping on the spot.
What began as a part-time job quickly became something much more meaningful.
As she got to know residents and families, Ellie realized her true passion wasn’t clinical care alone. She was drawn to the relationships, connections, and support systems that make senior living so unique. When an opportunity opened in resident relations, she took the next step in her journey and discovered the work she was meant to do. More than 18 years later, she’s still serving the same community she first walked into all those years ago.
That deep connection to The Rivers gives Ellie a perspective that few leaders have. Having grown alongside the community for nearly two decades, she has witnessed its challenges, celebrated its successes, and helped guide its evolution.
Today, she is especially proud of the strong culture that has been built among residents and team members. Under her leadership, The Rivers has reached nearly full occupancy, an achievement she notes is something the community had not experienced during her 18 years there. Seeing the community’s potential realized, and watching long-term growth come to fruition, has been one of the most rewarding chapters of her career.
What excites her most about senior living is that no two days are ever the same. The needs and expectations of older adults continue to evolve, and Ellie embraces the opportunity to evolve alongside them.
She appreciates Transforming Age’s commitment to changing the perception of aging and continually looking ahead to what the future of senior living will look like five, ten, and fifteen years down the road.
When Ellie talks about leadership, one theme rises above all others: leading by example.
She believes values are most meaningful when they are lived every day through actions rather than words. Whether she’s serving in the dining room, helping with dishes, or stepping in to support an activity, Ellie never asks a team member to do something she wouldn’t do herself.
“If I’m not willing to do it, I should never expect someone else to do it,” she says. That philosophy has helped her build trust and credibility with team members because she understands firsthand the challenges and responsibilities of the roles they perform every day. Having worked in various positions throughout the community, she carries a deep respect for the people who make The Rivers successful.
For Ellie, Transforming Age’s Culture of Excellence is rooted in relationships and trust.
She believes excellence isn’t about perfection. It’s about taking the time to know people, greeting them by name, listening carefully, and creating meaningful connections. Whether interacting with residents, families, or team members, she sees every conversation as an opportunity to strengthen trust and demonstrate care.
Those relationships are what continue to inspire her.
Over the years, Ellie has watched residents gain confidence, build friendships, and come out of their shells in ways their families never expected. She has supported families through difficult transitions and celebrated countless moments of growth and joy alongside them. While people often remember challenges and concerns, Ellie treasures the quiet success stories that happen every day, the moments when residents thrive, families find peace of mind, and team members make a lasting impact on someone’s life.
“It’s being that extra layer of support for someone,” she says, describing the role that senior living communities often play for residents and families alike.
Outside of work, Ellie stays busy with her husband, two young children, and a puppy. Between school events, sports practices, and family activities, she describes herself as a proud “sports mom.” Her children, ages four and seven, have already explored everything from baseball and T-ball to soccer and swimming.
When she has free time, you’ll often find her enjoying quality moments with family or visiting their family cabin. Those experiences help keep her grounded and remind her of the importance of connection, something that influences both her personal and professional life.
As residents, families, and team members continue to get to know Ellie, she wants them to know one thing above all else: her door is always open.
She believes trust, communication, and collaboration are the foundation of a strong community. She encourages team members not only to bring forward concerns but also to share ideas and solutions, recognizing that the people closest to the work often have the best insights.
Over the course of her career at The Rivers, Ellie has experienced many of life’s biggest milestones. She got married, became a mother, and navigated the loss of her own mother, all while growing professionally alongside the community she now leads. Through every chapter, she has been supported by residents, families, and team members who have become an extended family of their own.
That shared journey is what makes her leadership so personal.
For Ellie, senior living is ultimately about helping people live fulfilling lives, building meaningful relationships, and ensuring that every resident feels supported, respected, and valued. It’s a mission she has embraced for more than 18 years and one she continues to carry forward every day at The Rivers.
