Our History
The ROAD Internship Program was established to introduce emerging professionals to the diverse and rewarding career opportunities within senior living through hands-on experience, mentorship, and professional development. Since its inception, the program has evolved into an immersive rotational experience that provides broad exposure to community operations, helping interns explore career pathways while developing the skills and knowledge needed to become future leaders in the industry.

What is our ROAD Internship Program?
A rotational internship featuring immersive experiences across multiple senior living departments, combined with a capstone project that explores important industry topics and opportunities.
Why did we build it?
To introduce emerging professionals to the diverse career opportunities available in senior living and inspire the next generation of leaders through hands-on experience, professional development, and meaningful impact.
When do we have it?
Each summer from June to August
Who is Involved?
The program engages interns with organizational leaders, community teams, mentors, and professionals across multiple departments, providing hands-on learning, mentorship, and exposure to diverse career opportunities within senior living.
How do we learn together?
Interns engage in hands-on learning through rotational assignments, mentorship, cross-functional collaboration, and real-world projects. By working alongside community leaders and team members across multiple departments, participants gain valuable industry knowledge, build professional skills, and develop a deeper understanding of senior living.
Where do we have internships?
California, Minnesota, Nebraska, Washington, and now Iowa! Some communities involved are: Skyline, The Rivers, Tradition, Parkshore, Eastmost, AlmaVia of San Francisco, and AlmaVia of San Rafael. More to come!

The ROAD Internship Program gave me the opportunity to explore several aspects of marketing and communications while working on meaningful projects that made a real impact. From creating branded merchandise and supporting marketing campaigns to writing blog content and conducting interviews, I was able to gain hands-on experience and develop valuable professional skills. The experience helped me grow as a communicator, build confidence in managing multiple projects, and better understand how marketing supports an organization’s mission.

2026 ROAD Intern
Before starting the ROAD internship, I really did not know much about senior living. I’m an applied mathematics major, so it was pretty far outside of what I normally do in school, and I wasn’t sure what I would have to contribute. But that ended up being one of the best parts of the experience. I got to step into something completely different, and the people there made me feel welcome from the beginning.
What I liked most was getting to see what senior living is actually like day to day. It was a lot more active and personal than I expected. I got to spend time around residents, see different parts of the community, and learn how much goes into making everything work. One of my favorite moments was giving a piano presentation for the residents. It was a simple thing, but it gave me a chance to actually connect with people and be part of the community instead of just watching from the outside.
By the end of the internship, I had a completely different view of senior living than I did going in. I learned a lot, but more than anything, I’m glad I got the chance to try something that was outside my usual path. It reminded me that you do not always have to know exactly where something fits into your future for it to be worth doing.
